Laughing in the face of Canadians - another Conservative con job

Four years later, not a penny of fines under gas-pumps law

More than four years after the Conservative government brought in new rules to ensure gasoline retailers weren’t cheating motorists, Industry Canada has yet to hand out a single penalty under the Fairness at the Pumps Act.

The law put in place a mandatory inspection regime for gas pumps and new monetary penalties for retailers caught short-changing motorists. It also raised the maximum penalty for repeat offenders to $50,000.

The law was drafted in response to a 2008 Ottawa Citizen investigation, “Hosed at the Pumps,”  that found one in about 20 fuel dispensers in Canada was cheating consumers by dispensing less fuel than the meter said.

The bill was passed into law in 2011 but didn’t come into force until last summer. Industry Minister James Moore promised the law would ensure that consumers don’t get ripped off by faulty gas pumps.
